Foley
Foley is the reproduction of natural sound in an environment being created in a particular scene through artificial purposes or sounds created to create the sense of a dramatic sound i.e.. an explosion or glass smashing etc. Foley is a post-production technique and if created most successfully the audience will not notice this added sound effect within a scene. The purpose behind Foley fundamentally is for audience comfortability and creating a realistic scene. Watching a scene supposable on 5th Avenue in New York City for example with no sound of cars driving past and beeping of horns and people walk past and talking etc. would indicate to the audience that the scene was created in a studio and would remove the sense of realistic sense to the piece, it would also be uncomfortable for the audience to view.

Foley artists take to a recording studio with a variety of props and equipment to aid them in producing the sound effects, in order for the Foley artists to be accurate on there required sound effects the film or the extract of the film/video game/music video etc. will be played in front of the Foley artist as the artist begins to create the sounds. Although this may appear as a thoroughly fun and simple job generating the correct timing and noting all sound effects required within each scene can often be largely time consuming and often quite tedious, yet Foley is essential to create a sense of a realistic scene with everyday sounds present.
