Genre Type Casting

Amongst the many genres of film and the variety they offer to audiences also comes to an extent restrictions and general assumptions and ideas that aren't exactly convention to that particular genre. An form of this comes from 'Genre Type Casting' in which a particular actor/actress is constantly seen in one genre and eventually the audience over a period of time will begin to identify this particular actor/actress with that genre. This can be beneficial to the audience amongst viewing a trailer and seeing a particular actor/actress and being able to instantly be aware of the genre the film is of.

Examples Of Genre Type Casting are as follows-

Sylvester Stallone-

Sylvester Stallone is a typical type cast actor who the audience will instantly expect to be seeing him in the action adventure and other more masculine genres of film. For examples Stallone has starred in 'The Expendables' and more notably his role as 'Rocky' in the 'Rocky Balboa' films. The audience would instantly link the actor to a typically masculine based film. The audience would not respond well if they where to see Stallone starring in a romantic comedy or other genres seen to be more of the typically feminine appeal.

Hugh Grant-

Hugh Grant is another good genre type cast example. Often found in the genre of Romantic-Comedies in which he plays 'The Romantic English Gent' starring in films such as 'Love Actually', 'Notting Hill' and more commonly known for his role in 'Bridget Jones'.

Matt Damon-

A typical actor for the 'Thriller' genre starring in films such as 'The Borne Identity', 'Ocean's Twelve' and 'The Bourne Ultimatum' Matt Damon is a genre type cast for the 'Thriller' genre in which is a clear example of when the viewer will instantly link the particular actor to a genre, in this case that of the 'Thriller' genre is what the audience will link to when they see Damon appear on their screen.
